Understanding the Climate of Monteverde
Located approximately 10° north of the tropics, Costa Rica enjoys consistently warm temperatures year-round. However, the country is home to numerous microclimates influenced by elevation, precipitation, topography and geography. Monteverde is an outstanding example of a unique microclimate.
Costa Rica has two distinct seasons: the dry or golden season from early December to mid-May, and the wet or green season from mid-May to late November. Keep in mind that the Caribbean coast experiences higher rainfall throughout the year, enjoying its golden season in September and October.
Monteverde, situated approximately 4,662 feet (1,444 m) above sea level, lies on the Continental Divide, creating ideal conditions for the clouds that envelop its mountaintop forests. Moisture-laden winds ascend the mountains, forming clouds that bring the rain essential to the cloud forest ecosystem.
While the drier months (January to April) offer warmth and sunshine, light rain may occur, enhancing the lush landscape. When the summer rains stop, stunning rainbows often grace the skies over Monteverde, providing breathtaking views.
The rainiest months, September and October, present challenges for wildlife viewing as animals seek shelter. The trails may get muddier, but the cloud forest is still stunning, whether it’s rain, hail or shine!
Bird Watching Paradise
Monteverde is considered one of the top birdwatching destinations in Costa Rica, hosting hundreds of resident and migratory bird species. These include the elusive resplendent quetzal, blue-hooded magpies, orange-bellied trogons, three-braided bellbirds and, of course, the vibrant hummingbirds.
March and April mark peak season for viewing resplendent quetzals as they court and nest. Bird lovers should look for these impressive birds around the wild avocado trees and listen to the song of the bellbirds.
With more than 450 species of birds identified by enthusiastic visitors, Monteverde transforms even the most casual observer into an avid bird lover, especially during the courtship and nesting season.
